The community was founded on May 1, 1974, by a group that included Kathleen “Kat” Kinkade, and its early craft enterprises helped support a cooperative way of life. Members share income, expenses and responsibility for everyday needs. Their businesses reflect that commitment to working together, supporting their community and building lasting relationships with customers.

Handmade rope sandals for relaxed days outdoors

Utopian Rope Sandals have been made by East Wind Community members since 1976. The design began as a way to put leftover rope from the community’s hammock production to use. Today these sandals continue that craft tradition, with polypropylene rope woven into open footwear for casual wear around the water, the garden or home.

The supplier identifies these sandals as handmade in America, and its community workshop is in Tecumseh, Missouri. That manufacturing statement identifies where the sandals are made; the origin of the polypropylene feedstock is not separately documented in the available product information.

Lightweight polypropylene rope construction

Woven soles and crisscross straps create the sandal’s distinctive appearance.
