American-Made Flags: US, State, Military & Historical

The flag you fly is more than just a piece of fabric; it is a declaration of your values, a tribute to your history, and a symbol of the community you call home. At BuyAmerican.com, we believe that the symbols of our nation should be crafted on its soil. It is a simple matter of integrity: an American flag should support American workers. Welcome to our All Flags collection, the definitive marketplace for FMAA-certified banners that are grown, woven, dyed, and sewn entirely within the United States.

In a market flooded with cheap, translucent imports that fray within weeks, we stand apart by championing the "heirloom standard" of flag making. We partner with historic American manufacturers—some of whom have been stitching stars and stripes since the 1800s—to bring you flags built with pride. Whether you are looking for a shimmering nylon Old Glory to wave on your front porch, a 2-ply polyester fortress flag to withstand coastal storms, or an official military banner to honor a veteran, our collection ensures that your display is authentic, durable, and 100% Made in the USA.

The American Flag: FMAA Certified Quality

When it comes to the Star-Spangled Banner, compromise is not an option. Our collection features exclusively FMAA (Flag Manufacturers Association of America) certified flags. This seal guarantees that every step of the manufacturing process—from the extrusion of the fibers to the final packaging—occurred in the US.

  • Sewn & Embroidered: Reject the flat, printed look of mass-market flags. Our premium US flags feature individually sewn stripes and densely embroidered star fields. This construction creates a rich, textured appearance and reinforces the fabric against wind damage.

  • All-Weather Nylon: The most popular choice for residential display. SolarMax nylon is lightweight, allowing it to fly proudly in the slightest breeze, and is treated to resist fading from harsh UV exposure.

  • Heavy-Duty Polyester: Engineered for the toughest environments. Our 2-ply woven polyester flags feature an open weave that lets high winds pass through, making them the superior choice for coastal areas, mountains, or commercial flagpoles.

State & Territory Flags

Celebrate your local heritage with flags that honor the unique identity of your state. From the lone star of Texas to the pelican of Louisiana and the bear of California, our state flags are crafted with the same rigorous standards as our national ensign.

  • Vibrant Colorfast Dyes: State seals are often complex. Our manufacturers use acid-dye technology to ensure deep, penetrating color that stays vibrant season after season.

  • Official Specifications: We stock flags that adhere to the official government design specifications for all 50 states and US territories.

Military & Service Flags

Honor those who serve with official flags for the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, and Space Force.

  • Licensed Designs: These flags feature the correct seals and heraldry authorized by the respective branches of the military.

  • POW/MIA & First Responders: We also carry the solemn POW/MIA flag and "Thin Line" flags to honor police, firefighters, and EMS personnel, constructed with heavy-duty canvas headers and brass grommets for secure mounting.

Historical & Specialty Banners

Connect with the past through our selection of historical American flags.

  • Revolutionary Roots: Fly the flags that started it all, including the Betsy Ross (13 Stars), the Bennington ‘76, and the Gadsden (Don't Tread on Me). These flags are perfect for holidays, history buffs, and educational displays.

  • Seasonal & Decorative: Beyond the standard, we offer seasonal garden flags and decorative banners that add a touch of American craftsmanship to your landscaping.

Buying Considerations: Flying with Integrity

Choosing the right flag depends on your environment, your flagpole, and your intent. Here is what to consider to ensure you are flying your colors correctly and durably:

1. Material Selection: Nylon vs. Polyester vs. Cotton

  • Nylon: Known as "The All-Purpose Flier." It has a lustrous, shiny finish and dries quickly. It is the best choice for most homes, especially those with wall-mounted poles, as it flies easily in light wind.

  • Polyester (2-Ply): Known as "The Workhorse." It feels and looks like coarse cotton canvas. It is heavy and needs a strong wind to unfurl, but it is significantly more durable against fraying and tearing. Choose this for 24/7 display or high-wind regions.

  • Cotton: Known as "The Traditionalist." It has rich, deep colors and a classic matte texture. However, it is heavy when wet and prone to mildew. It is best reserved for indoor display, short-term holiday use, or casket interment.

2. Sizing Your Flag The size of the flag should be proportional to the pole to look balanced and reduce stress on the hardware.

  • House Mount (5-6 ft pole): Use a 2.5' x 4' or 3' x 5' flag.

  • In-Ground (20 ft pole): Use a 3' x 5' flag.

  • In-Ground (25 ft pole): Use a 4' x 6' flag.

  • Rule of Thumb: The length of the flag should be roughly 1/4 to 1/3 the height of the flagpole.

3. FMAA Certification Federal law requires every flag to be labeled with its country of origin. However, the term "Made in USA" can sometimes be used loosely if imported fabric is merely cut and sewn here. The FMAA Certified seal is your guarantee of a 100% domestic supply chain. If it doesn't have the seal, it might not be truly American.

4. Flag Etiquette & Care

  • Lighting: If you fly the US flag 24 hours a day, the US Flag Code states it must be properly illuminated during the hours of darkness.

  • Repair vs. Replace: If a flag is frayed at the "fly end" (the edge furthest from the pole), it can often be trimmed and re-hemmed once. However, once the fraying reaches the stars or the stripes are torn, it should be retired.

  • Disposal: When a flag is so tattered it no longer fits for display, it should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning. Many American Legions, VFWs, and Scout troops offer flag retirement services.
