Magnolia, Southern (Magnolia grandiflora) - 5 Seeds
• Heirloom
• Open Pollinated
• Perennial Tree
• USDA Zone: 6-10
The Southern Magnolia, also known as Bull Bay, is a majestic evergreen tree that embodies the essence of Southern charm. Reaching a mature height of 60-80 feet, this heirloom variety is a true statement piece in any landscape. Its glossy, dark green leaves provide year-round beauty, while its stunning, fragrant white flowers, which can reach up to 12 inches in diameter, bloom in late spring, filling the air with a sweet, lemony scent. In addition to it's stunning beauty, magnolia grandiflora has been used medicinally for centuries.
Our magnolia seeds will be "fresh berries" meaning they will look just like little berries about the size of a raisin. The berry form protects and nourishes the seed... which is a good thing. Think of it like a baby chicken in an egg.
GROWING INSTRUCTIONS:
For best results, cold stratify seeds for 3 months before sowing. Soak seeds in water for 24 hours, then remove the berry coating. Next, mix with moist sand or peat moss and store in a sealed bag in the refrigerator. After stratification, sow seeds 1/4 inch deep in well-draining soil. Keep the soil consistently moist and provide a warm, bright location. Germination may take several weeks. Transplant seedlings outdoors after the last frost, choosing a location with full sun to partial shade and fertile, well-drained soil.
