Buying Considerations: The Seat of Quality

Buying chairs online requires attention to detail regarding dimensions and construction. Here is what separates our American-made seating from the rest:

1. Joinery is Everything A chair is only as strong as its joints. Mass-market chairs are often held together with glue and dowels that fail under stress. Our artisan partners utilize superior techniques:

• Mortise and Tenon: The gold standard for strength. A projecting piece of wood (tenon) fits tightly into a hole (mortise) in the adjoining piece.

   

• Corner Blocks: Look under the seat. High-quality chairs have blocks screwed and glued into the corners of the frame to prevent wobbling.

2. Seat Height: Dining vs. Counter vs. Bar Don't get caught with the wrong height.

• Dining Height: Standard tables (30" high) require chairs with a seat height of 18" to 20".

• Counter Height: Kitchen islands (36" high) require stools with a seat height of 24" to 26".

• Bar Height: Raised bars (42" high) require stools with a seat height of 30".

• Rule of Thumb: You want 10 to 12 inches of space between the seat and the underside of the table/counter for legroom.

3. Wood Species & Weight American hardwoods like Maple, Oak, and Cherry are dense and heavy. This weight gives the chair a feeling of stability and prevents it from tipping over easily. Softwoods like Pine are generally not recommended for dining chairs as they dent and loosen too easily.
