American-Made United States Flags: Indoor & Outdoor

The American flag is the most recognized symbol of freedom in the world. It represents the history of our nation, the sacrifice of our veterans, and the enduring hope of the American dream. At BuyAmerican.com, we stand by a simple, unwavering principle: the Star-Spangled Banner should be crafted by the people it represents. It is a point of integrity that every United States flag in our collection is grown, woven, dyed, and sewn entirely within the USA.

We have curated a selection of flags that reject the cheap, translucent imports found in big-box stores. Instead, we partner with historic American manufacturers—some with roots dating back to the 1800s—who adhere to the strictest standards of quality. Whether you are looking for a vibrant nylon flag to wave on your front porch, a heavy-duty polyester fortress flag to withstand coastal storms, or a traditional cotton banner for a memorial service, our collection ensures that your display is authentic, durable, and FMAA certified.

All-Weather Outdoor US Flags

For the homeowner who flies Old Glory every day, durability is paramount. Our outdoor flags are engineered to resist the elements while maintaining their vibrant red, white, and blue hues.

  • Premium Nylon (SolarMax): The most popular choice for residential use. This material is lightweight, allowing the flag to unfurl and fly in the slightest breeze. It features a lustrous finish that shimmers in the sunlight and is treated to resist UV fading.

  • Heavy-Duty Polyester (2-Ply): Built for the toughest environments. If you live in a high-wind area, on the coast, or in the open plains, this "fortress" fabric is essential. It features an open weave that allows wind to pass through, reducing stress on the fabric and extending the life of the flag.

  • Sewn & Embroidered: We do not sell cheap printed flags. Every outdoor flag in our collection features individually sewn stripes and densely embroidered white stars, ensuring a textured, high-quality appearance from both sides.

Traditional Cotton & Ceremonial Flags

Connect with history through the timeless look of cotton.

  • Mercerized Cotton: These flags offer deep, rich colors and a classic matte texture that synthetic fabrics cannot replicate. While they are heavy when wet and best suited for short-term outdoor use or indoor display, they are the undisputed choice for holidays and historical reenactments.

  • Interment & Memorial: We stock official government-spec cotton flags suitable for military burial honors and memorial cases. These flags are crafted with the utmost respect and precision to honor those who served.

  • Fringe & Indoor Sets: For offices, auditoriums, and churches, we offer flags finished with pole hems and gold fringe, ready for formal presentation.

Flagpoles & Mounting Hardware

A premium flag deserves a sturdy foundation.

  • Spinning Poles: Eliminate the frustration of a tangled flag. Our tangle-free spinning poles feature a top section that rotates on ball bearings, keeping your flag flying free.

  • Telescoping In-Ground Poles: Upgrade your curb appeal with aircraft-grade aluminum poles that extend up to 20 feet, allowing you to raise and lower the flag easily without ropes or pulleys.

Buying Considerations: Flying with Integrity

Selecting the right US flag involves understanding your local environment and how you intend to display it. Here is what to look for to ensure you are flying your colors correctly:

1. FMAA Certification Federal law requires every flag to be labeled with its country of origin. However, the term "Made in USA" is sometimes used loosely by companies that import fabric and merely sew it domestically. To guarantee a 100% domestic supply chain, look for the FMAA (Flag Manufacturers Association of America) seal. This certifies that every step—from the extrusion of the fibers to the final packaging—occurred in the United States.

2. Material Selection Guide

  • Nylon: Best for most homes. Dries fast, flies easily, bright colors.

  • Polyester: Best for high wind/commercial use. Heaviest, most durable, looks like canvas.

  • Cotton: Best for indoor/ceremonial use. Traditional look, but prone to mildew if left outdoors in the rain.

3. Sizing Your Flag The size of the flag must be proportional to the pole to look balanced and prevent hardware damage.

  • House Mount (5-6 ft pole): The standard size is 3' x 5'. For smaller porches, a 2.5' x 4' is acceptable.

  • In-Ground (20 ft pole): A 3' x 5' flag is standard.

  • In-Ground (25 ft pole): Step up to a 4' x 6' flag.

  • Rule of Thumb: The length of the flag should be roughly one-quarter to one-third the height of the flagpole.

4. Stitching and Reinforcement The first part of a flag to fail is the "fly end" (the edge furthest from the pole) due to whipping in the wind. High-quality American-made flags feature reinforced fly ends with four rows of lock-stitching (sometimes six on larger flags) to prevent fraying and extend the lifespan of the banner.

5. Etiquette

  • Lighting: If you display the US flag 24 hours a day, the US Flag Code states it must be properly illuminated during the hours of darkness.

  • Retirement: When a flag is tattered and no longer a fitting emblem for display, it should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning. Many American Legion posts and Boy Scout troops offer flag retirement services.
