A staple across many Asian cultures, this soup has been used for generations to help mothers recover, rebuild, and restore after birth. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, these herbs are known to support blood building, replenishment, and immunity, offering deep nourishment during a time of depletion.

At FAMMá, we created an Essential Postpartum Recovery Herbal Soup Kit formulated by TCM practitioners using thoughtfully selected herbs traditionally used for thousands of years. Simply add a whole chicken and simmer to create a rich, restorative broth when it is needed most.

Each herbal packet makes about 8 servings when prepared with a whole, raw chicken.
At approximately $5 to $7 per serving, including your own chicken, this is an affordable way to create a deeply nourishing meal at home. We recommend using chicken from local rancher when possible, or pasture raised organic as a second option. You can also use chicken bone broth for a sipping herbal bone broth tea.

Suggested Use for Postpartum Recovery

For the first 5 weeks postpartum:
• Enjoy 1 herbal packet per week to gently nourish and rebuild
• About 5 packets total

For C-section or more intensive recoveries, especially when the body has experienced greater depletion or blood loss:
• Week 1: 3 servings daily
• Week 2: 2 servings daily
• Weeks 3 to 6: 1 serving daily
• Weeks 7 to 8: 1 serving every other day
• About 8 herbal packets total

Suggested Use for Women’s Health Maintenance

• Best suited for irregular, missing, or longer cycles
• Supportive during perimenopause and menopause
• Enjoy 1 herbal packet per month to gently nourish and rebuild
• Use consistently as part of a long-term nourishment routine

Cooking Instructions
• Add herbal packet (set goji berries aside) and a whole, raw chicken (3 to 4 lbs) to a large pot (at least 8 quarts). Include neck, feet, and organs if available.
• Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 45 to 60 minutes
• Remove only the chicken and let cool
• Refill pot that has remaining herbs with filtered water to about 7 quarts and simmer an additional 15 minutes
• Shred chicken and set aside

To Serve
• Add shredded chicken, shiitake, jujube, and a few goji berries to a serving bowl
• Note: jujubes contain seeds

Serving Notes
• Traditionally not seasoned. Add a pinch of sea salt if desired
• The broth is naturally earthy with a subtle sweetness

Storage
• Remove and discard remaining herbs (dong quai, codonopsis, Chinese yam) before storing
• Soup should include broth, chicken, shiitake, jujube, and goji berries
• Keeps up to 5 days in the fridge or can be frozen in portions
• Reheat to a boil before serving
