Urban Southern launched its online shop in spring 2015 after designer and founder Regina Bauman and her husband, leather craftsman Jay, developed a business from a Christmas-gift tote in Monterey, Tennessee. The brand moved to Pennsylvania following its 2019 acquisition by Daniel and Rachel Smucker and is now based in Narvon, in Lancaster County. Its stated priorities include practical design, traditional leather craftsmanship and thoughtful everyday use. The company also emphasizes community and supporting women, drawing on its family workshop roots as it develops bags, accessories and home goods.

Materials

Canvas and full-grain leather trim; brass hardware. Hunter and Sapphire use 10 oz waxed canvas; Cream uses 12 oz unwaxed cotton canvas. Canvas ounces describe fabric weight, not the finished bag weight.

Care

Brush dry dirt gently with a soft brush. Spot clean canvas with cold water and a soft cloth; for a stubborn mark, the maker allows a small amount of mild soap rather than detergent. On Cream unwaxed cotton canvas, use a white cloth and blot gently. Keep soapy water and canvas cleaner away from leather trim, which needs its own leather cleaner and conditioner. Do not machine wash, dry clean, use hot water or scrub with a hard brush. Re-waxing guidance applies to Hunter and Sapphire waxed canvas, not the unwaxed Cream fabric.
