The Damascus Steel Japanese Tanto Chef Knife runs on one straight edge. No belly, no curve, no rocking. That geometry serves a single motion very well. You draw the blade back through the cut in one long pull. Cooked brisket and roast pork fall in clean slices.

The angular break near the tip is the yokote line. Japanese smiths used it to separate two ground surfaces. It leaves a short, stiff front edge above the main one. That section scores skin and pierces without flexing.

This Japanese tanto knife for sale ships in a snap-closure leather sheath. The brass guard means your hand grips rosewood, never steel. Wet hands stay behind the plate.

Japanese Tanto Chef Knife at Divine Knives with a full-width brass guard, a straight rosewood tsuka, a brass butt ferrule, and a yokote break on a 6.5-inch blade.

The History Behind This Japanese Tanto Kitchen Knife

The tanto shape dates to Japan's Heian period, over a thousand years ago. Smiths ground the front section separately and marked the join with a yokote. Kamakura-era workshops refined that line into a defined feature. Layered steel served the same tradition, folded to balance hardness against toughness. Divine Knives forges that outline with modern Damascus billets.

Damascus Steel Japanese Tanto Chef Knife Performance

A straight edge beats a curved one at long slicing. Nothing rides up mid-cut. Set the heel down and pull straight back. Roast beef and cured ham part in even sheets.

The yokote tip stays stiff under pressure. It scores crackling and splits melon rind without wandering. This is a handle-grip blade, not a pinch-grip blade. The brass guard sets your hand behind the steel every time. Hone the straight edge on a rod, and it comes back fast.

Damascus Steel Tanto Blade Construction

Rosewood forms the whole handle in one straight piece. Warm reddish brown, straight-grained, with no palm swell or contouring. That shape follows the traditional tsuka rather than a western grip. It suits a full hand hold with the thumb along the spine.

A brass guard spans the full blade width at the ricasso. It projects past the steel on both sides and blocks any forward slide. A second brass ferrule caps the butt and closes the handle. The whole assembly threads onto a hidden tang with no pins. A light coat of oil keeps the rosewood from drying.

Best Uses for the Redspire Tanto

Carving and slicing are the real work for this blade. Cooked meats, cured hams, and large roasts suit the straight edge. Collectors buy Damascus tanto chef knife pieces for the yokote and the pattern. It also carries well to a camp kitchen in its sheath. Board prep and vegetable work want a taller blade instead.

Order the Redspire Damascus Steel Japanese Tanto Chef Knife today. A straight edge and stiff tip slice better than any curve.

FAQ’s

What is the yokote on this blade?

The yokote is the angled line separating the tip section from the main edge. It leaves a short, stiff front edge that resists bending.

Why does this knife have a guard?

The brass guard keeps your hand on the rosewood and off the steel. It matters most once your hands turn wet or greasy.

What does this blade slice best?

Cooked meats, roasts, and cured hams. A straight edge pulls through in one draw without riding up.

Can it replace a chef knife on a cutting board?

No. The blade sits low and gives no knuckle clearance. Keep a taller blade for chopping vegetables.

How is this different from the Ridgeline chef knife?

The Ridgeline has a broad curved blade and a spine ramp for board work. This tanto has a straight edge, a guard, and a yokote tip.
