The Musso Bowie Knife carries a brass strip down its spine. Soft metal set into hardened steel makes no obvious sense. Period makers did it anyway on several large Bowie knives. The reason stayed debated long after the knives were built.

Everything else on this pattern runs large. The blade measures 12 inches with a broad flat and an angular clip. The clip carries a ground bevel along its full length. The belly runs one unbroken curve to the point.

This Musso Bowie for sale runs 17 inches from tip to butt. A brass S guard and black horn finish the handle end.

Bowie Knife at Divine Knives with a brass spine strip, a brass S guard, a black buffalo horn grip, and a 12-inch polished blade.

The History Behind This Classic Bowie Blade

Large Bowies of this size date to the 1830s and 1840s. The pattern carries the name of the collection holding the original. A soft brass strip inlaid along the spine appears on several period blades. S-shaped guards were common on American knives of that decade. Divine Knives follows the outline without altering its proportions.

Musso Bowie Knife Performance

Twelve inches changes how a knife behaves. Mass sits well ahead of the guard on this build. You guide the blade rather than drive it. Momentum does most of the work once it starts moving.

The brass S guard hooks in both directions. That shape keeps your hand set without a second grip position. A broad 2.5-inch blade resists twisting under load. Polished steel marks easily at this surface area. Wipe the flats down every time you handle it.

Musso Bowie Design and Construction

The guard curves up on one side and down on the other. That S shape came off American benches in the 1840s. Brass takes it, and brass runs the spine strip too. Both catch light against the polished steel around them.

Black horn forms the grip in one smooth block. It curves downward toward the butt and fills the palm. No pins break the surface anywhere on it. A hidden tang carries the assembly from guard to butt. Horn dries and cracks in heat, so store it cool.

FAQ’s

What is the brass strip along the spine?

A soft brass strip sits inlaid into the top of the blade. It appears on several large Bowies from the same period.

How big is this knife exactly?

Seventeen inches overall with a 12-inch blade. That makes it the largest piece in the range.

Can this be used for hunting?

At this size, it works better on a wall than in a pack. Field dressing wants something under 9 inches.

How is this different from the Brightsteel sub-hilt Bowie?

The Brightsteel runs 8 inches with a steel sub-hilt and maple. This runs 12 inches with a brass S guard and horn.

What does the S-shaped guard do?

It hooks in both directions and holds your hand in place. Straight guards only stop forward movement.
