Nylon is a popular material for everyday outdoor American flags because it is lighter than heavyweight spun polyester and generally flies more readily in lighter or moderate wind. It also dries quickly after rain, making it well suited to residential and general outdoor display.
For locations with stronger or more persistent wind exposure, a heavier polyester flag may be worth considering. Compare the differences in our nylon vs. polyester American flag guide.
The largest sizes require additional reinforcement because increased flag area creates greater load on the fabric, stitching, header and flagpole hardware.
| Size | Additional Construction |
|---|---|
| 8' × 12' | Rope-and-thimble reinforcement, six rows of lock stitching at the fly end and reinforcement at the header |
| 10' × 15' | Rope-and-thimble reinforcement, six rows of lock stitching at the fly end and reinforcement at both the header and fly end |

When displaying the flag outdoors, choose a location that provides adequate clearance from roofs, gutters, branches and other surfaces that can cause repeated abrasion. Periodically inspect the fly end, header, stitching and attachment hardware for wear.
